Abstract

An alkali metal carbonate, of intermediate bulk density and particle size, is produced by calcining a mixture of hydrated alkali metal carbonate and alkali metal bicarbonate and of composition in terms of sodium carbonate equivalents within the range 1:1 to 1:1:6. The mixture is calcined at a temperature above that at which the decomposition of the bicarbonate begins and at which the hydrated carbonate becomes anhydrous. Anhydrous alkali metal carbonate or a portion of previously calcined product may be added to the mixture before calcination. Sufficient water may be added to the mixture before calcination of bicarbonate and carbonate to form the hydrate of the carbonate. The alkali metal may be sodium and may be associated with an ammonium salt, e.g. ammonium carbonate which may be from the ammonia-soda process in which case calcination is at 100 DEG -250 DEG C. If sodium carbonate is used the salt may be anhydrous and sufficient water to form the monohydrate is added.
