Abstract

free from NaOH is made from NaOH-containing sodium carbonate (A) from an atomization tower by mixing with a quantity of NaHCO3 (B) at least equimolar with the NaOH content, and calcining the mixture (C) at 180-250 degrees C. (A) is produced by the action of CO2 on atomized NaOH solution in the atomized tower. Calcination temp. may be 220 degrees C. (A) may be mixed with recycled product Na2CO3 and/or Na2CO3 from the ammonia-soda-process. Recycled Na2CO3 often contains unchanged NaHCO3 which serves to react with the NaOH in (A). 5 tonne/hr NaOH-containing Na2CO3 (A) and 25 tonne/hr (B) containing 9% wt H2O from the ammonia-soda process, and 10 tonne/hr recycled Na2CO3 are mixed and calcined, yielding 29.5 tonne/hr Na2CO3, of which 19.5 tonne/hr is discharged as finished product, 10 tonne/hr being recycled.
