Abstract
Ores containing calcium borate, e.g. colemanite, are reacted with an aqueous solution containing ammonium carbonate or bicarbonate and ammonia to obtain a solution of ammonium borate which is filtered to remove solids including calcium carbonate, and the filtrate is boiled to concentrate it and to decompose the ammonium borate to boric acid and ammonia. The reaction is carried out at a temperature up to 90 DEG C. and at atmospheric pressure or above. The ore is first crushed and preferably is first calcined and then crushed. If it is not calcined it may be first reacted with solution from a previous reaction, the solution filtered and the solid material reacted again with fresh solution. Examples are given.
