Abstract

An aqueous solution of sodium chromate and sodium dichromate, in which 40% to 98% of its CrO3 content is present as sodium dichromate, is concentrated until sodium chromate crystallizes out of solution, the sodium chromate is removed while the mother liquor is kept at above 50 DEG C., e.g. 70 DEG to 125 DEG C., and then the mother liquor is cooled, e.g. to below 40 DEG C., to crystallize out the sodium dichromate, which is removed. The starting solution may be one obtained by reacting carbon dioxide with a solution obtained by leaching the product resulting from calcining a mixture of sodium carbonate and chromite ore; preferably sodium dichromate is added to the solution before the reaction with carbon dioxide, as described in Specification 882,302. Examples are given.
