Abstract

Chlorine dioxide is obtained by heating an aqueous acid solution containing a trivalent chromium compound and a chlorate dissolved therein, and stripping the chlorine dioxide formed from the solution, the trivalent chromium being in excess of the stoichiometric amount required for reaction with the chlorate. The solution may be regenerated by reduction with sulphur dioxide and recycled after further addition of chlorate thereto. Preferably a stream of hot inert gas is used to heat the solution and to strip the evolved chlorine dioxide therefrom, as described and claimed in Specification 796,778. The preferred embodiment is common to both Specifications. Specification 581,931 also is referred to.
