Abstract
Chromic acid is prepared by reacting an aqueous solution of an alkali metal bichromate of 88% by weight concentration, mother liquor from a previous reaction and 100% sulphuric acid at 50 DEG to 75 DEG C. to form a slurry of chromic acid crystals, filtering off the chromic acid crystals, cooling the filtrate to 20 DEG to 25 DEG C. to crystallize alkali metal bisulphate, filtering off the alkali metal bisulphate crystals, and recycling the mother liquor for further reaction with 88% bichromate solution and 100% sulphuric acid. When the process is started and no mother liquor is available, a 70% solution of bichromate is reacted with 93 to 95% sulphuric acid to form a slurry of chromic acid crystals which is treated as above, the mother liquor so obtained being recycled and reacted with 88% bichromate solution and 100% sulphuric acid. The chromic acid crystals are melted and pure chromic acid recovered. The alkali metal bisulphate obtained may be reacted with alkali metal chromate to obtain bichromate for use in the process of the invention. The bichromate is usually sodium bichromate, but potassium, lithium, casein and rubidium bichromates may be used.
