Abstract
Potassium fluoride, hydrogen fluoride and silica are produced by reacting potassium fluosilicate with ammonia and water to obtain an aqueous solution of potassium fluoride and ammonium fluoride and a precipitate of silica in a first step, mixing the solution, after removal of the silica, with an amount of potassium fluoride substantially equal to that contained in the solution, concentrating the solution to obtain a precipitate of acid potassium fluoride and evaporate the ammonia in a second step, and decomposing the acid potassium fluoride by heat to yield potassium fluoride and hydrogen fluoride in a third step. In Example 1, gaseous ammonia is introduced into an aqueous suspension of potassium fluosilicate (obtained by reacting effluents from superphosphate manufacture with KCl), the temperature rising to 70 DEG -90 DEG C. The reaction liquor is decanted from undecomposed potassium fluosilicate, which is recycled to the next batch, and is filtered to remove suspended silica, which is washed with hot water. The filtrate containing KF and NH4F is mixed with a quantity of KF equal to that of the contained KF and is evaporated to dryness to drive off the ammonia, which is recycled to the next batch. The residue, acid potassium fluoride, is heated to 500 DEG C. to drive off anhydrous HF, which is recovered as such or by absorption in water or in solid alkali fluoride. Half of the KF residue is withdrawn as final product, while the other half is recycled to step (2). In Example 2, aqueous ammonia is gradually added to an aqueous suspension of potassium fluosilicate heated to 80 DEG C., and the process is continued as in Example 1. Specification 765,901 is referred to.
