Abstract
N - alkyl - 5 - alkyl -, and N - alkyl - 5 : 5 - dialkyl-2 : 4-diketo-oxazolidines are prepared by treating with an alkylating agent, a 5-alkyl-, or a 5 : 5-dialkyl-2 : 4-diketo-oxazolidine. Preferred alkylating agents are alkyl sulphates and alkyl halides with a silver salt. In examples: (1) 5 : 5-dimethyloxazolidine-2 : 4-dione is alkylated with dimethyl sulphate, to form 3 : 5 : 5-trimethyloxazolidine-2 : 4-dione; (2) 5-methyl-oxazolidine-2 : 4-dione is treated as in example (1) to give 2 : 5-dimethyloxazolidine-2 : 4-dione; (3) 5 : 5-dimethyl-oxazolidine is converted into its silver salt by treatment with silver nitrate and this is reacted with ethyl iodide to form 3-ethyl-5 : 5-dimethyloxazolidine-2 : 4-dione.
