Abstract

Quaternary ammonium nitrites of the formula <FORM:1041272/C2/1> wherein R5 represents a C8- 22 alkyl or alkenyl group, R6 and R7 independently represent a C1- 4 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group, and R8 represents a hydroxyethyl or hydroxypropyl group, are prepared by reacting ethylene or propylene oxide with a nitrous acid salt of a tertiary amine of the formula <FORM:1041272/C2/2> The nitrous acid salt of the tertiary amine is preferably prepared by treating a solution of a strong mineral acid salt of the tertiary amine in a non-aqueous water-miscible solvent with a concentrated aqueous solution of sodium nitrite.
