The invention comprises 16a -bromomethyl-and 16a -chloromethyl-5a -pregnan-3b -ol-20-one, 16a -iodomethyl-5a -pregnan-3b -ol-20-one 3-formate, and 16a -iodomethyl-D 5-pregnen-3b -ol-20-one 3-formate, and a process for the preparation of 16a -monohalomethyl-steroids having at ring D the general formula:- <FORM:0937616/IV(a)/1> wherein R represents hydrogen or a hydroxy, acyloxy or alkyl ether radical and X represents a halogen, by treating a steroid having at ring D the general formula <FORM:0937616/IV(a)/2> wherein R has the above significance, with a hydrogen halide.
