Abstract

The invention comprises a 3,11-diketo-17(b )-hydroxy-17(a )-methyl steroid having the formula <FORM:0750941/IV(a)/1> wherein R is hydrogen or methyl, and the preparation thereof by oxidizing with chromic acid (e.g. in acetic acid, 11(a )-hydroxy-17(a )-methyltestosteron or 10 - normethyl - 11(a ) - hydroxy-17(a )-methyl testosterone. Examples disclose the preparation of 11-keto-17(a )-methyltestosterone and of 10-normethyl-11-keto-17(a )-methyltestosterone. Specification 724,149 is referred to.
