Abstract

The invention comprises 11b , 17a -dihydroxy -18-norpregn -4-ene -3, 20-dione, the 3, 20-disemicarbazone thereof, and the 3, 20-disemicarbazone of 17a -hydroxy -18- norpregn -4-ene-3, 11, 20-trione and processes for the preparation thereof by reacting 17a -hydroxy-18-norpregn -4-ene-3, 11, 20-trione with semicarbazide to form the 3, 20-disemicarbazone of 17a -hydroxy -18-norpregn-3, 11, 20-trione, reducing this compound with an alkali metal borohydride to yield the 3, 20-disemicarbazone of 11b , 17a -dihydroxy -18- norpregn -4- ene-3, 20-dione, and liberating the keto groups at 3- and 20-positions thereof e.g. with pyruvic acid so as to form 11b , 17a -dihydroxy -18- norpregn -4- ene -3, 20-dione.
