Abstract

The invention comprises 11b , 21-dihydroxy-16a -methylpregn-4-ene-3, 20-dione and its esters having the formula: <FORM:0970486/C1/1> where R represents either a hydrogen atom or an acyl radical derived from an organic carboxylic acid and processes for the preparation thereof in which 21-hydroxy-16a -methylpregn-4-ene-3, 11, 20-trione is semicarbazonized so as to block the 3- and 20-keto groups yielding the 3, 20-di-semicarbazone of 21-hydroxy-16a -methylpregn-4-ene-3, 11, 20-trione which is then reduced e.g. with potassium borohydride to yield the 3, 20-disemicarbazone of 11b , 21-dihydroxy - 16a -methylpregn-4-ene-3, 20-dione and the latter desemicarbazonized e.g. with pyruvic acid to liberate the blocked 3- and 20-keto groups thus yielding 11b , 21-dihydroxy-16a -methylpregn-4-ene-3, 20-dione. Subsequently the hydroxy group at 21-position may be esterified. Specification 970,483 is referred to.
