Abstract

The invention comprises the 3-ketals of 11b ,18-epoxy-18#x-methyl-pregn-4-en-3-one compounds having the formula <FORM:0973899/C1/1> in which R represents a ketal grouping, and R1 represents the grouping =H(OH) and R2 is hydrogen or R1 represents the oxygen atom =O of a keto group and R2 is a hydrogen atom, the ethoxalyl grouping or an iodine atom, and processes for the preparation thereof by saponifying a ketal of 18#x-methyl-20b -acetoxy-11b , 18-epoxy-pregn-4-en-3-one to form the 3-ketal of 18#x-methyl-20b -hydroxy-11b , 18-epoxy-pregn-4-en-3-one, oxidizing the latter to form the corresponding 20-keto compounds, reacting the 3-ketal of 18#x-methyl-11b , 18-epoxy-pregn-4-ene-3, 20-dione with ethyl oxalate to form the corresponding 3-ketal of 18#x-methyl-21-ethoxalyl-11b , 18-epoxy-pregn-4-ene-3, 20-dione, iodinating this compound to form the corresponding 3-ketal of 18#x-methyl-21-iodo-11b , 18-epoxy-pregn-4-ene-3, 20-dione, reacting this with an acyloxylating agent to yield the corresponding 3-ketal of 18#x-methyl-21-acyloxy-11b , 18-epoxy-4-ene-3, 20-dione which is optionally saponified. As acyloxylating agent there may be employed potassium acetate and as oxidizing agent chromium trioxide may be employed. Specification 973,896 also is referred to.
