Abstract

The invention comprises androst-4-ene-3,11-dione derivatives having the formula: <FORM:0931785/IV(a)/1> where R1 is the oxygen atom of a keto group and R is either a hydroxy or a para-toluenesulphonyloxy group, or R1 is the hydroximino group and R is the oxygen atom of a keto group, and processes for the preparation thereof by reacting andrenosterone with an alkyl nitrite so as to form 16-hydroximinoandrost- 4-ene-3,11,17-trione, reducing this compound, e.g. with zinc and acetic acid, to form 17-hydroxyandrost-4-ene-3,11,16-trione, which may be esterified, e.g. with p-toluenesulphonyl chloride, to obtain 17-p-toluenesulphonyloxyandrost- 4-ene- 3,11,16-trione.
