Abstract

The invention comprises androsta-3,5-diene derivatives having the formula: <FORM:0931784/IV(a)/1> in which R represents a lower alkyl group having 1-6 carbon atoms, and where R3 may be a ketone group in which case R1 will also represent a ketone group, but R2 a p-toluene-sulphonyloxy-substituent, or alternatively R3 is an hydroxyl group in which case the R substituent is as before but R1 is either a hydroxyl or ketone group, and R2 either a p-toluenesulphonyloxy group or a hydrogen atom, and processes for the preparation thereof by enolising 17-p-toluenesulphonyloxy-androst-4-ene-3,11,16-trione, e.g. with an alkyl orthoformate, to form a 3-alkoxy-17-p-toluenesulphonyloxyandrosta- 3,5- diene-11, 16-dione, reducing this enol ether to form 3-alkoxy- 11b ,16-dihydroxy- 17-p-toluenesulphonyloxy-androsta-3, 5-diene, which is saponified at 17-position to obtain 3-alkoxy-11b -hydroxy-androsta-3,5-diene-16-one.
