Abstract

The invention comprises compounds having the formulae <FORM:1005726/C2/1> wherein R represents H or an acyl radical or alkyl radical and processes for the preparation of a 17a -ethynyl-13b -n-alkyl-18-nor-estradiol by selectively oxidizing 13b -n-alkyl 18-nor-estradiol at the 17-position so as to form the corresponding estrone which after preliminary etherification at the 3-position is then ethynylated by reaction with ethynyl magnesium halide. Selective oxidation may be effected with aluminium isopropylate in the presence of cyclohexanone and etherification may be effected with a -tetrahydropyranyl ether.
