Abstract

The invention comprises 16a -methyl -18- nor-5b -pregnane-11, 20-diones having the general formula: <FORM:0963288/C1/1> wherein R11 and R111 together represent the residue of a ketal group, RIV is a hydrogen atom and X is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl group; or R11 and R111 together represent the oxygen atom of a keto group, X is a hydrogen atom and RIV is a hydrogen or bromine atom and processes for the preparation thereof by oxygenating a 3-ketal of 16a -methyl -18- nor-5b -pregnane-3, 11, 20-trione to obtain the corresponding 3-ketal of 17a -hydroperoxy-16a -methyl -18- nor -5b - pregnane-3, 11, 20-trione, reducing said 17a -hydroperoxy compound to obtain the corresponding 3-ketal of 17a -hydroxy -16a - methyl -18- nor-5b -pregnane-3, 11, 20-trione, deketalising said 3-ketal to obtain 17a -hydroxy -16a -methyl -18- nor -5b - pregnane-3, 11, 20-trione, which is brominated to obtain 4-bromo -17a - hydroxy -16a - methyl -18- nor -5b - pregnane-3, 11, 20-trione. Oxygenation may be effected with oxygen in the presence of potassium t-butylate and the reduction step with zinc and acetic acid. Specifications 807,203, 877,227 and 934,707 also are referred to.
