Abstract

21 - Bromo -20- keto - pregnanes and -allopregnanes are prepared by bromination of the 21-unsubstituted compounds with bromine in the presence of a strong acid and in a solvent consisting essentially of a primary alkanol of 2 to 4 carbon atoms or a C-alkoxy derivative thereof. The steroids may contain one or more other substituents or unsaturation selected from 3-hydroxy, 3-acyloxy, 11-hydroxy, 11-acyloxy, a 9(11)-double bond, 16a - or 16b -methyl, 16-methylene and 17a -hydroxy. A small amount of a further inert organic solvent, such as a cyclic ether, may also be present in the reaction mixture to aid dissolution. Hydrogen chloride is a suitable acid. Examples are given, and the products are converted to 21-acetates.
