Abstract
The invention comprises a 5,6-oxido-17a -hydroxypregnane-3,20-dione 17-acylate 3-alkylene ketal wherein the acyl group is of a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid containing 1-12 carbon atoms and wherein the alkylene radical contains not more than 8 carbon atoms, and the attaching oxygen to carbon bonds are separated by a chain of at least 2 and not more than 3 carbon atoms, the corresponding 19-nonpregnane compounds, a compound of the formula <FORM:0886964/IV (b)/1> wherein R11 is hydrogen and Ac is the acyl group defined above, a compound of the formula <FORM:0886964/IV (b)/2> wherein R is the alkylene radical defined above and Ac is the acyl radical defined above and processes for the preparation thereof by treating a 17a -hydroxyprogesterone I with an anhydride or halide of an organic carboxylic acid to obtain the corresponding enol acylate of 17a -hydroxyprogesterone 17-acylate which is hydrolysed to give 17a -hydroxyprogesterone-17-acylate II, treating II with an alkane diol to obtain 17a -hydroxyprogesterone 17a -acylate 3-alkylene ketal III, and treating III with a peracid to obtain 5a ,6a -oxido-17a -hydroxy-pregnane-3,20-dione 17-acylate, 3-alkylene ketal IV. The 19-norpregnane compounds are similarly converted. Examples describe the preparations of 5a ,6a -oxido-17-hydroxypregnane-3,20-dione 17-acetate, 5a ,6a -oxido - 17a - hydroxy - 19 - norpregnane - 3, 20 - dione 17-acetate 3-ethylene ketal.
