Abstract

The invention comprises 11b -bromohecogenin and its acetate, and the preparation of 11b -bromohecogenin and its esters with alkanoic acids containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms by bromination of the 11-unsubstituted compounds with bromine in a solvent consisting essentially of a primary alkanol containing at most 4 carbon atoms and in the presence of a strong acid. If the process is effected in methanol, esters are methanolysed. A suitable acid is hydrogen chloride. Examples are given and dehydrobromination of the products or its acetate, is also described.
