Abstract
Keto steroids having a bromine atom in at least one of the a -positions relative to the keto group are dehydrobrominated by reaction with aragonite in the presence of an organic solvent and, optionally, an alkali metal halide. The process may be used for the preparation of D 1-, D 4- or D 1,4-3-keto steroids from the corresponding 2- and/or 4-bromo compounds. If an 11a -sulphonyloxy group is present in the starting material a D 9(11)-double bond is also formed. Examples describe the preparation of D 1,4-3-keto-17b -hydroxy-androstadiene hexahydrobenzoate and acetate; D 1- 3, 11, 20-triketo-17a -, 21-dihydroxy -5a - pregnene 21-acetate; D 1,4,9(11)-3, 20-diketo-17a , 21-dihydrox -16a -methyl-pregnatriene 21-acetate; D 1,4-3, 17-diketo-androstadiene;prednisone 21-acetate; D 1-2-bromo-3, 11, 20-triketo-17a , 21-dihydroxy-5a -pregnene 21-acetate; 3a -acetoxy- 11, 20-diketo D 16-pregnene; and 3a -hydroxy-12-keto-D 9(11)-choleric acid methyl ester 3a -benzoate.
