Abstract

Novel compounds of the formula <FORM:1077393/C2/1> in which R is O or H(b -OH) and R1 is H or the acyl radical of a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid are obtained by acyloxylating or hydroxylating as the case may be the corresponding compound of Formula (III) <FORM:1077393/C2/2> on the 21-position by a method known to be capable of achieving the corresponding transformation in 20-keto steroids not containing the oxazoline ring, e.g. by reaction with iodine in the presence of calcium oxide to form the corresponding 21-iodo derivative which is hydrolysed and esterified to form a 21-ester and if the 21-hydroxy compound is the desired product the 21-ester is hydrolysed. The compounds of the Formula (III) may be obtained by the bromination and dehydrobromination of a compound of the formula <FORM:1077393/C2/3> wherein R is as defined above. Pharmaceutical compositions having anti-inflammatory activity and containing the above compounds may be administered orally.
