Abstract

The invention comprises 6-chloro-16a -methyl-D 4, 6-pregnadien-17a -ol-3, 20-dione and esters thereof; and their preparation by reacting a 6,7-epoxy-16a -methyl-D 4-pregnen-17a -ol-3,20-dione or an ester thereof with hydrogen chloride and, if desired, esterifying the product if necessary. An example is given. 6a , 7a -Epoxy-16a -methyl-D 4-pregnen-17a -ol-3,20-dione 17-acetate is prepared by reacting 16a -methyl-D 4-pregnen-17a -ol-3, 20-dione 17-acetate with chloracil in iso-aryl alcohol with acetic acid to give 16a -methyl-D 4,6-pregnadien-17a -ol 3, 20-dione 17-acetate and reacting this with monoperphthalic acid.
