Abstract

The invention comprises pregnane derivatives having at ring D the structure <FORM:0894168/IV (b)/1> and a process for the preparation thereof which comprises reacting a steroid compound of the pregnane series bearing OH groups at the 17-and 21-positions and C=O at the 20-position, with a stoichiometric excess of ethyl-orthoformate in the presence of an acid which acts as a catalyst. Illustrative products of the invention are 3-ethoxy-17a ,21-ethoxymethylenedioxy - pregna - 3, 5 - dien - 11, 20 - dione, 17a , 21 - ethoxymethylene - dioxy - pregna - 1,4 - dien - 3, 11, 20 - trione and 3 - ethoxy - 17a ,21 - ethoxymethylene - dioxy - pregna - 3, 5, 9 (11) - trien-20-one.
