Abstract

The invention comprises 16a - methyl - 6a -fluoro - 9a - chloro - D 1,4 - pregnadiene - 11b ,21-diol - 3,20 - dione, the 21 - acetate, -caproate, -butylacetate and trimethyl acetate thereof, 16a -methyl-9a -chloro-D 1 4-pregnadiene-11b ,21-diol-3,20 -dione and the 21-acetate thereof and a process for the manufacture of D 1,4-16a -methyl steroids of the general formula <FORM:1068058/C2/1> in which R1 is H or acyl and R2 is H or halogen wherein a compound of the formula <FORM:1068058/C2/2> is subjected to reaction at the 9(11)-double bond whereby the 9a - chloro - 11b - hydroxyl grouping is introduced, e.g. by treatment with N-chloro-succinimide and perchloric acid.
