Abstract

The invention comprises 16a ,17a -substituted steroids having the formula <FORM:0880201/IV (b)/1> in which R is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkanoyl radical containing 1-6 carbon atoms and =C9-C11- is <FORM:0880201/IV (b)/2> and a method for the preparation thereof which comprises (a) hydrolysing the corresponding 16a ,17a -isoalkylidenedioxy steroid, (b) and, if desired, alkanoylating to form the corresponding 16a -alkanoyloxy steroid. Hydrolysis may be effected with a mineral acid. Illustrative products of the invention are 9a -fluoro-11b , 16a ,17a -trihydroxy-1,4-pregnadiene-3,20-dione, 9a -chloro - 11b ,16a ,17a - trichydroxy - 1,4 - pregnadiene - 3,20 - dione, 16a - acetoxy - 17a - hydroxy - 1,4,9(11) - pregnatriene - 3,20 - dione, and 9a - fluoro - 16a ,17a - dihydroxy - 1,4 - pregnadiene - 3,11,20-trione.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a compound of the formula <FORM:0880201/VI/1> wherein R is H or a lower alkanoyl radical containing 1-6 carbon atoms and =C9-C11 is =C=CH-, <FORM:0880201/VI/2> and a pharmaceutical diluent. They are employed as tablets, powders and pills.
