Abstract

The invention comprises steroids of the formula <FORM:0912379/IV (b)/1> wherein R represents hydrogen or a carboxylic acyl radical and the 16-methyl radical is in the a - or b -position, and the preparation thereof by reacting the required 16-methyl-1,4-pregnadiene-9a -(chloro or bromo)-11b ,17a , 21-triol-3,20-dione-21-acylate with alkali to form the desired free 21-hydroxy steroids and, when required, acylating the 21-hydroxy steroids to form the 21-acylates. The invention also includes a process for the preparation of 16-(a - or b -)methyl-1,4-pregnadiene-9a -fluoro-11b ,17a ,21-triol-3, 20-dione 21-acylate by treating 16-(a - or b -)methyl-17a ,21-dihydroxy-1,4 - pregnadiene - 9b ,11b - oxido-3,20-dione21-acylate (which may be prepared by the process referred to above) with hydrogen fluoride and, when required, hydrolysing the product to form the free 21-hydroxy compound. In the above processes, the 16-methyl-1,4-prenadiene-9a -(chloro or bromo)-11b ,17a , 21-triol-3,20-dione-21-acylate may be prepared by a process claimed in Specification 912,378.
