Abstract
o-Phthalic esters are prepared by heating phthalic anhydride and an alcohol having 4-12 carbon atoms in the presence of an aryl sulphonylchloride. Suitable sulphonyl chlorides are p-toluene sulphonylchloride and p-chlorobenzene sulphonyl chloride. The reaction is preferably carried out using an excess of the alcohol at the boiling point of the reaction mixture, the water from the reaction and the excess alcohol being removed as an azeotrope. Examples relate to the preparation di-n-octyl-, di-n-nonyl-, di-n-decyl- and di-n-undecyl phthalate.
