Abstract

Ascorbic acid is obtained from derivatives of keto-gulonic acid by heating esters of the monomethylene ether of l-keto-2-gulonic acid, e.g. monoacetone l - keto - 2 - gulonic with lower alcohols, in water at temperatures above about 120 DEG C. and preferably above 140 DEG C. Suitable alcohols are methyl, ethyl and butyl which may be primary, secondary or tertiary, saturated or unsaturated, aliphatic or aromatic or mixed aliphatic-aromatic. In an example, monoacetone ketogulonic acid ethyl ester is heated in water to 135-140 DEG C. to produce ascorbic acid.
