Abstract

Sterols and sterol esters having the formula <FORM:0701724/IV(b)/1> in which R and R1 are hydrogen, acyl or aroyl radicals, are obtained by reducing the corresponding 3.17-disubstituted <FORM:0701724/IV(b)/2> androstadiene and if desired hydrolyzing any ester groups in the 3 and/or 17 positions. The reduction may be effected catalytically with hydrogen and a catalyst such as platinum or by means of an aliphatic alcohol and an alkali metal. The reaction may be effected in the temperature range 0 DEG -50 DEG C.
