Abstract

D 1,4-Androstadiene-3,17-dione is prepared by subjecting a steroid of the pregnane series having a double bond at the 16(17)-position, a keto group at the 20-position and a keto or hydroxy group at the 3-position to microbiological oxidation in a medium fermented with the microorganism Fusarium caucasicum. The steroid reactant may also contain a double bond at the 5-position. Suitable reactants specified are D 5,16-pregnadien-3b -ol-20-one and D 16-allopregnene - 3,20 - dione.
