Sterols having in the 10-position betahydrogen, beta-formyl, beta-carboxyl, betahydroxy, beta-hydroxymethyl or beta-acyloxy when the 3-substituent is OH or OCOCH 3 , or having beta-hydrogen or any of the aforementioned groups except beta-hydroxymethyl when the 3-substituent is = O, OH or OCOCH 3 , or having a 6-10, 4-10 or 2-10 oxymethylene ether configuration in conjunction with an oxygen-containing group at the 3-position and unsaturation at the 4(5)-position or halogen at the 5-position, are converted into products containing a 17-oxygen containing group without concomitant ring-cleavage by a microbiological transformation with organisms of the genera Nocardia, Mycobacterium, Arthrobacter or Corynebacterium. Starting materials include 3# - acetoxy - 19 - hydroxy - cholest - 5 - ene; 3# - acetoxy - 19 - hydroxy - # - sitost - 5 - ene; 6#,19 - oxido - cholest - 4 - en - 3 - one; 6#,19- oxido - sitost - 4 - en - 3 - one; 3# - acetoxy - 5α- chloro - 6#,19 - oxido - cholestane; 3# - acetoxy- 5α - chloro - 6#,19 - oxide - sitostane; 19 - norcholest - 4 - en - 3 - one; 10 - carboxy - 19 - norcholest - 4 - en - 3 - one; 19 - exo -cholest - 4- en - 3 - one; 19 - hydroxy - cholesterol acetate; 19 - nor - sitost -4 - en - 3 - one; 10 - carboxy- 19 - nor - sitost - 4 en - 3 one ; 19 - oxo - sitost- 4 - en - 3 - one; 19 - hydroxy - sitosterol acetate; and 2,4.dimethoxy.63-19-oxido.cholesta. 1;4-then-3-one.
