Abstract

D 1,4 - Androstadiene - 3,17 - dione is obtained by contacting with the enzymatic activity of the fungus ATCC 11721 a steroid compound having the formula <FORM:0765509/IV(b)/1> wherein R represents alkyl, alkenyl, acyl, -COCH2OH, -COCH2O acyl, -COCH2O alkyl, keto or hydroxyl; or <FORM:0765509/IV(b)/2> where R represents alkyl, alkylene, acyl, -COCH2OH, -COCH2O acyl or -COCH2O alkyl. Examples disclose the use of progesterone, 16-dehydroprogesterone, desoxycorticosterone and D 4-androstene-3,17-dione.
