Abstract

The invention comprises 14a -hydroxy-4-androstene-3,17-diene, and the preparation thereof by reacting 14a , 17a , 21-trihydroxy-4-pregnene-3,20-diene with an oxidizing agent, e.g. chromic acid, in quantity and for a time sufficient to convert to keto the hydroxy group at the 17-position and to cause degradation of the side chain at the 17-position without causing similar changes elsewhere in the molecule. 14a , 17a , 21-trihydroxy-4-pregnene-3,20-dione is obtained by oxygenating 17a , 21-dihydroxy-4-pregnene-3,20-dione by means of Helicostylum piriforme ATCC 8992.
