Abstract

The invention comprises 17(a )-hydroxy-4-pregnene-3,6,20-trione and the preparation thereof by reacting 6(b ), 17(a )-dihydroxy-4-pregnene-3,20-dione with a sufficient quantity of oxidizing agent for a sufficient time to convert the 6-hydroxy to ketonic oxygen without producing a similar conversion at the 17-position. Suitable oxidizing agents are potassium permanganate and N-bromosuccimide. An example describes the use of chromic acid.
