Abstract
The invention comprises 6-hydroxy-11-ketoprogesterone, and the preparation thereof by reacting 6,11-dihydroxyprogesterone and an oxidizing agent, e.g. potassium permanganate, N-bromacetamide in tertiary butanol or chromic acid, the quantities of reactants being such that there is present not more than approximately 1 gram atom of available oxygen per gram mol. of 6,11-dihydroxyprogesterone, whereby oxidation of the hydroxy group at the 11-position of the starting material is brought about without causing oxidation elsewhere in the molecule. 6,11,a - dihydroxyprogesterone is obtained by oxygenating progesterone by means of Rhizopus arrhizus ATTCC 11145.
