Abstract

D 17 - 3,21 - dihydroxy - 11 - keto - 20 - cyanopregnenes are selectively oxidized at the 3-hydroxy grouping without affecting the hydroxy group in the 21-position by reacting said D 17-3,21 - dihydroxy - 11 - keto - 20 - cyanopregnene with N-halogen-substituted carboxylic acid amides or imides, e.g. N-bromoacetamide or N-bromosuccinimide. The reaction may be effected using methanol, tertiary butanol, pyridine or a mixture of methanol and pyridine in the temperature range 18 DEG and 40 DEG C. and at a pH of 6 to 7.
