Abstract
The invention comprises 6 - acyloxy - 11 - keto-progesterones and the preparation thereof by reacting 6 - hydroxy - 11 - keto - progesterone with an esterifying agent, e.g., an organic carboxylic acid anhydride. Examples disclose the production of 6-acetoxy-, 6-formyloxy-, 6-propionyloxy-, 6-benzoxy-, and 6-(b -carboxy-propionyloxy) - 11 - keto - progesterone. 6,11a - dihydroxyprogesterone is obtained by the oxygenation of progesterone by means of a culture of the fungus Rhizopus arrhizus. 6-Hydroxy-11-keto-progesterone is obtained by oxidizing 6,11a -dihydroxyprogesterone with a chromic acid-acetic acid solution.
