Abstract

The invention comprises pregnane- and allopregnane - 3.7 - diol - 20 - ones or esters thereof, and their preparation by bringing a pregnane-3-ol-20-one into contact with enzymes produced by a growing fungus of the genus Rhizopus, e.g. Rhizopus arrhizus, under aerobic conditions, with subsequent esterification if desired. The fermentation is effected in the presence of a nutrient medium for the fungus. Examples describe the preparation of the diol compounds above and of 3.7-diacetoxy- and 3 : 7-dibenzoyloxy-allopregnane-20-one. Esterification may be effected with ketene, ketenes of acids, acids, acid anhydrides or acid chlorides.
