Abstract

The invention comprises 14a , 17a , 21-trihydroxy - 4 - pregnene - 3,20 - dione or a 21-acyl ester and the preparation thereof by bringing into contact 17a ,21-dihydroxy-4-pregnene-3,20-dione or an ester thereof with oxygenating enzymes produced by a growing fungus of the genus Helicostylum, e.g. Helicostylum piriforme, under aerobic conditions. Preferably the fermentation is conducted under aerobic conditions using a viable fungus and in the presence of a nutrient medium for the fungus.
