Abstract

11b -Hydroxy-steroids of the pregnane series are obtained by subjecting the corresponding 11-desoxy-steroid to the action of an enzyme of a micro-organism in an aqueous medium in the presence of oxygen, the microorganism being selected from the group of genera composed of Colletotrichum, Tricothicium and Coniothyrium, and recovering the 11b -hydroxy-steroid formed. Preferably the species is of the group consisting of Colletotrichum pisi, Colletotrichum phomoides, Tricothecium roseum and Coneothyrium helleborine. Starting steroids include 11 - desoxy - 17a - hydroxycorticosterone, progesterone, desoxycorticosterone, and 17a -hydroxyprogesterone.
