Abstract

D 1,4 - Pregnadiene - 11b ,17a ,21 - triol - 3,20-dione or a 21-ester thereof, is prepared by subjecting D 1,4 - pregnadiene - 17a ,21 - diol - 3,20-dione, or a 21-ester thereof, to the action of an enzyme of a micro-organism of the genus Coniothyrium, e.g. Chelleborine, in an aqueous medium in the presence of oxygen. The ester may be derived from organic acids such as acetic, propionic, butyric, enanthic, succinic, benzoic, phenylacetic and phenylpropionic acids. A detailed example is given.
