Abstract

11b -Hydroxy-steroids are prepared by contacting 11-unsubstituted-methylene-steroids with oxidising enzymes produced by growing micro-organisms of the species Curvularia prasadii, for example, I.M.I. No. 71475, or a mutant thereof, for example, I.M.I. No. 89062. In the examples hydrocortisone is prepared from D 4-pregnene-17a ,21-diol-3,20-dione, and prednisolone is prepared from D 1,4-pregnadiene-17a ,21-diol-3,20-dione. Specifications 769,998 and 770,000 are referred to.
