Abstract

9a -Hydroxy-3-keto-D 4-steroids are prepared by subjecting 3-keto-D 4-steroids which are unsubstituted in the 11-position and are free from 9(11)-unsaturation to the action of enzymes of the micro-organisms Nocardia corallina. Suitable starting compounds for the above process are D 4-androstene-3, 17-dione, testosterone, progesterone, desoxycorticosterone and 17a , 21-dihydroxy-4-pregnene-3, 20-dione. In the examples the following compounds are prepared: 9a -hydroxy-D 4-androstene-3, 17-dione, 9a -hydroxy-desoxycorticosterone, 9a -hydroxy-progesterone, 17a , 21-dihydroxy-4-pregnene-3, 20-dione, and 9a , 17a -dihydroxyprogesterone.
