Abstract

An 11-oxygenated steroid compound is produced by contacting a steroid compound with a living organism of oxygenating enzymes therefrom, of an active strain of fungus of the genus Eurotium, e.g. Eurotium chevalieri. The fermentation may be conducted under submerged, aerobic conditions. Starting steroids mentioned are progesterone, pregnenolone, pregnenolone acetate, desoxycorticosterone, desoxycorticosterone acetate, ergosterol and stigmasterol.
