Abstract

D 4 - Pregnene - 11b ,17a ,21 - triol - 3,20-dione is prepared by contacting D 4-pregnene-17 a ,21 - diol - 3,20 - dione or 21 - carboxylic ester thereof such as the 21-acetate or propionate thereof with the oxygenating activity of a strain of Gongronella urcolifera (Ribaldi) e.g. in water under submerged aerobic conditions in a termperature between 26 DEG and 30 DEG C. for 24 to 72 hours. A detailed example is given.
