Abstract
The invention comprises 16a - and 16b -methyl-1,4,6-pregnatrienes of the general formula <FORM:0924368/IV(a)/1> wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or an acyl radical, R1 represents a hydroxyl or keto group, X represents a hydrogen or halogen atom, and the preparation thereof by dehydrogenating the corresponding 4,6-pregnadienes with selenium dioxide, or the corresponding 1,4-pregnadienes with chloranil and the preparation of the above compounds wherein R represents a hydrogen atom by treating the corresponding 4,6-pregnadienes, wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or an acyl radical, with the dehydrogenating activity produced by growing Bacillus sphaericus micro-organisms. The above processes may be modified in that a 4,6-pregnadiene reactant is prepared by a process claimed in Specification 923,125, and 1,4-pregnadiene reactant is prepared by a process claimed in Specification 877,086. A 21-hydroxy-1,4,6-pregnatriene of the above general formula may be esterified to form the corresponding 21-acyloxy compound. Specifications 877,085 and 906,443 also are referred to.
