Abstract

The invention comprises an 11a -acyloxypregnane-3,20-dione or 11 a -acyloxy-allopregnane-3,20-dione wherein the acyloxy group is of the formula AcO, Ac being the acyl radical of a carboxylic acid, and the preparation thereof by reacting 11a -hydroxypregnane-3,20-dione or 11a -hydroxyallopregnane-3,20-dione with an acylating agent, e.g. ketene, ketenes of selected acids, selected acids, acid anhydrides or acid chlorides. Examples disclose the use of acetic and propionic anhydrides as acylating agents. Other acylating agents introducing acyl groups containing up to eight carbon atoms may be used. 11 a -Hydroxyprogesterone is obtained by oxygenating progesterone with a culture of the fungus Rhizopus nigricans. 11 a -Hydroxypregnane-3,20-dione and 11 a -hydroxyallopregnane-3,20-dione are obtained by hydrogenating 11 a -hydroxyprogesterone in the presence of palladium-charcoal.
