Abstract

9a , 10a -Epoxy-17b -hydroxy-oestr-4-en-3-one is obtained in a process wherein a 17b -acyloxy-9a , 10a -epoxy-oestr-4-en-3-one having the general formula: <FORM:0965928/C1/1> (where -OAc represents an acyloxy radical derived from an organic carboxylic acid) is reduced to form the corresponding 17b -acyloxy-9a , 10a -epoxy-3e -hydroxy-oestr-4-enewhich is then saponified to yield 9a , 10a -epoxy-3#x, 17b -hydroxy-oestr-4-ene which is reoxidised selectively at the 3-position to yield the desired 9a , 10a -epoxy,17b -hydroxy-oestr-4-en-3-one. Reduction may be effected with sodium borohydride and selective reoxidation with manganese dioxide, selenious anhydride or t-butyl chromate. Specifications 936,894 and 965,929 are referred to.
